Do i need a dedicated server for my web hosting?

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

:There are two answers to this, but the basic one is yes. If you are starting your own business and do not want to hire an IT Staff or a person to run your web server, having a dedicated server is a very good idea. Essentially you are hosting your web site on another company’s computer. This company lives off of your money and as such will work their hardest to keep you and your service as a customer. This means they will keep their software up to date, and their downtime to a minimum in the event of a hardware failure. Another thing to consider is the amount of bandwidth you will be using for your website. A dedicated host will usually have a better bandwidth than your local ISP would. Having a dedicated server also means that you do not need to have a computer in your office or home that is always on and could require a special internet connection from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This also means you do not have direct control over this server, but that is okay because as stated earlier, the service provider, or host, needs your service. The more complicated answer is for people who know more about computers and have an extra one in their house. There are ways of keeping your computer on the Internet without having special connections from your ISP, but it is not for the faint of heart. This will allow you far greater customization, but at the cost of having to manage your own software and hardware.

Web Hosting

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

With an exorbitant number of web hosting companies around, it is always a harder task to opt for the best web hosting company. You cannot simply close your eyes and pick up simply anyone. Everyone needs and deserves the best company with the best possible hosting services. The hosting company that you choose determines the prospect of your website to a great extent.

For the initial level you should have your requirements clear:

  • Platform – Linux Or Windows
  • Language – PHP, ASP, JSP or .NET
  • Database – MS-SQL server database of MySQL
  • Whether mail server is required or not
  • Whether IP address should be dedicated or not
  • Required amount of server space and bandwidth
  • Kind of backup technology required
  • Procedure to change server (if needed)
  • Present downtime record of hosting service provider
  • Kind of support they offer
  • Method of backup for database

Once these above queries are clear and you are 100% satisfied for all aforementioned aspects, ask for payment options, cost and all IF ANY circumstances.

Now, if you are ready with all essential hosting information, go to second step.

  • How to upload files and database structure?
  • Do you have those accesses to server?
  • Do you have or will have ftp access?
  • Do you have or will have ftp access?
  • What are the options available for data files upload?
  • Will you upload the files or your web developer will do it?
  • Do you have an option to change your ftp password?

There are many web hosting companies selling web space with quality support and other required details. Many web-hosting companies provide an array of hosting packages ranging from entry-level budget packages to the more enterprise-grade packages for firms and power users. Each package exemplifies the maximum bandwidth, hard drive space and CPU power as well as the online tools you can avail yourself of to manage your website. Most reputable web hosts do have comparable packages. About the few things discriminates them are the management tools used. And often, other service features like 24/7 technical support and user-friendliness can clinch your decision. It’s really your choice based on what you believe gives the best value for the price you are willing to pay.
